Conservation and Research Projects Underway or Being Planned

We are realizing our goals in several ways via grants and other aid and assistance. Our projects are diverse. They are conservation-oriented or in a field that impacts humans and their environment.

Opportunities to work with us are encouraged, either through cooperative projects inolving your boats, land, labs, scientists, workers, or otherwise - in our general work or in specific projects. Details are available for work that is underway. For work that is still being organized (Those that report "No details available yet."), there is the opportunity to get in on the ground floor. Together, we can pursue grant opportunities or conduct the work we agree on.

Ecosystem Interactions

Scallop and Clam Dredging and Trawling. Thesis: Dredging increases production of benthic organisms and those that eat them. Details.

Herring, mackerel, cod, right whales. Thesis: Fisheries management practices are causing non-recovery of cod and right whales. Details.

Menhaden management. Thesis: Fisheries management practices are causing harmful effects on valuable Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coast commercial and gamefish species. Details.

Coastal ecological dead zones. Thesis: Taking a step back, the zones are not really dead. There is a net gain from the added nutrients that lead to an ecology that has an overall benefit because of the enhanced support of life on the edges and more distant. Project under development.  Details.

Animal lifespan relationship to the likelihood of breeding events. Thesis: Cicadas in the USA East, and scallops in France's Bay of Biscay and on Georges Bank live long enough to have at least one favorable breeding event. Knowing this relationship would have great value to managers of resources - for example to make sure there are enough adults to await years or decades for the next favorable event, whether a gyre that returns eggs and larvae to the habitat, or a major storm that cleans and prepares the sea floor for larval settlement. No details available yet. Project under development.  More Information.

Human Interactions

The human ability to know location. Thesis: Just as have pigeons and other animals, there is some inate human ability to know precise location  Or why else did we have - and use - a steering wheel in the Everett lobster boat cabin that had no windows or compass? No details available yet. Project under development.  More Information.

Protect fisheries and agriculture or remove trade barriers? Thesis: We should give our producers an advantage on competing products such as foreign cod, lobsters and wheat. Or, are we free traders? No details available yet. Project under development.  More Information.

Climate

Solar magnetic flux. Thesis: Flux alone from solar storms may explain all the Earth’s Temp variation since the early 1600s, through today. No details available yet. Project under development.  More Information.

Ice and soot. Thesis: Soot on ice, snow, beaches, deserts, and other light surfaces has under-appreciated impacts on sea ice extent, glaciers, and N hemisphere temps. No details available yet. Project under development.  More Information.

What is the rank of all contributors to a warming Earth? Thesis: Soot, human bodies, dark surfaces, combustion of fuels, greenhouse effects of vehicles (cars, trucks, busses, trains, ships), buildings, and gases - such as CO2, methane, andwater vapor - all have petential to warm the Earth. What is their rank? Project under development.  Details.

The effects of more CO2 in the ocean. Thesis: We will explore ALL the effects, both positive and negative and compare oceans with actually acidic US rivers - such as the Shenandoah, which abounds with fish, crustaceans,  mollusks and turtles.  Details.

Energy

How can Offshore Wind and Fisheries co-exist in the United States? No details available yet. Project under development. More Information.

Oil seeps and oil (non-refined spills). Thesis: Natural unrefined oil in the ocean is bad for those animals that get coated in it or whose organs are damaged by it. But, there may be a net gain from the added nutrients that support life, for example from natural seepage and from relatively small leekages from oil extraction or transport. No details available yet. Project under development. More Information.

Outreach and Education

Education: Focus on sharing knowledge on conservation and efficiency with citizenry and sharing information between fishermen, farmers, and scientists (both ways) about crops and resources, their peculiarities, their environment and for fishing - survey and fishing methods and strategies. Project under development. More Information.
